Each year, in addition to Literacy Service Planning,
Literacy Link South Central participates in or leads several activities in support of adult literacy programs across the province.
Here are some of the core activities we worked on in 2022/2023.
A community of practice brings together literacy practitioners with a common focus and provides an opportunity to share, explore, and work together to build our strengths. Through this community of practice, we are digging into what accessibility and UDL mean, and how we can apply this learning to our work as adult literacy practitioners.

The need for literacy training on-site at employer locations is growing across the province. To support adult literacy programs in approaching employers and planning for workplace delivery, we're creating videos that demonstrates the value in this type of training and sets the stage for conversations between literacy practitioners and employers.

Newcomers settling in rural areas of Ontario often find themselves with limited access to English as a Second Language programming. With adult literacy programs well-versed in supporting learners with diverse needs, some have stepped in to fill the training gap in those communities. Through this activity we are partnering with other organizations across the province to look at patterns in settlement and best practices to support English language learners when no ESL programming is available in rural areas. This learning will be summarized in a report shared across the province.

Pop Up PD provides free Professional Development opportunities for literacy educators through a series of six yearly webinars. For the 2022/2023 fiscal year, with our provincial partners, we're pleased to offer webinars on the following topics:

The provincial apprenticeship system continues to undergo changes, and with the growing need for more people entering the Skilled Trades, communication about those changes is critical. Through this committee we're working with partners from across the province to share information about Ontario's apprenticeship system through initiatives that include:
The needs of community-based literacy programs are different than those of programs associated with school boards and colleges. To support those unique needs, we work with our provincial partners to bring together representatives from programs across Southwestern Ontario to share ideas, brainstorm solutions, and discuss processes to benefit the needs of their learners.

Virtual reality is a term that used to be associated only with entertainment and gaming, but today it's being used as an immersive tool for education, skills training and employment programs around the world. Through this activity we are working with our provincial partners at e-Channelto research current understanding of this technology within the adult literacy field, and recommend ways it could be used in the future. Our findings will be shared in both a report and a webinar.
