Core Activity 2024/2025

Core Activities

Each year, in addition to Literacy Service Planning, Literacy Link

South Central participates in or leads several activities

in support of adult literacy programs across the province.

Here are some of the core activities we worked on in 2024/2025.

AI Professional Development

Literacy Link South Central partnered with Metro Toronto Movement for Literacy to develop online professional development/learning days with LBS service providers to develop best practices for supporting literacy learners, aiming to increase service provider capacity related to AI literacy and integrating new skills into teaching practices and delivery.

Supporting Apprenticeship Connections

Literacy Link South Central happily continued to partner with Simcoe Muskoka Skillforce along with other LBS partners, to support the integration and alignment of LBS services with Apprentices.

Two bilingual electronic newsletters were sent to LBS and apprenticeship stakeholders across the province, featuring up-to-date information on how the skills upgrading LBS programs offer align with the skills needed by apprentices, and how LBS can be integrated into that system to strengthen apprenticeship outcomes.

A bilingual social media campaign with the #HereForApprentices hashtag, promoting the ways LBS programs can further support apprentices, and PD for LBS practitioners around new apprenticeship resources developed through Skills For Success, were other great components of this project.

Approaches to Working with ESL

Literacy Link South Central enjoyed working with Laubach Literacy Ontario and other LBS partners to develop and deliver a webinar to partner networks outlining approaches to partnering with ESL.

Through this training, LBS agencies across the partner networks were provided with an understanding of approaches to working with ESL, good practices, and available resources and tools that can be used to support learners accessing LBS programs.

Unlocking Learning Potential with Affordable AI Tools

Literacy Link South Central was thrilled to work with Contact North on this project dedicated to researching the integration of affordable or free Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for use in Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS).

The focus extended beyond the technology to make meaningful connections to accessibility, ethics, and overall LBS Program considerations.  Six e-bulletins on this topic were released throughout 2024-2025. Find each issue here:

Supporting Workplace and Workforce Literacy

We were excited to lead a Community of Practice focused on workforce/workplace literacy, where we continued to enhance planning and coordination around how LBS programs and networks respond to local labour market needs and ensure participants have the support and resources they require.

Community of Practice meetings were held on June 11, 2024, October 8, 2024, and January 14, 2025.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Working in partnership with the Workforce Planning Board of Grand Erie, a survey was conducted in the Brant, Haldimand, and Norfolk counties to better understand the challenges and obstacles they faced with Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The Grand Erie Workforce Training and Skills Survey targeted those who experienced challenges with prior learning recognition and was disseminated through a variety of means, including social media, news releases, our community partners, and (when possible,) at community events.

Front-Line Support for Service Providers

Literacy Link South Central is excited to develop a system for collaboration and resource sharing among front-line service providers!

The online system will provide opportunities for front-line literacy practitioners to connect, network, and share good practices.
