Artificial Intelligence in Literacy Education

We are pleased to introduce you to AI Bytes, a series of new e-Bulletins created by Literacy Link South Central and Contact North. Each issue will focus on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used in learning environments to benefit both educators and adult learners.

Modern AI tools (for example, "Generative AI") can be a valuable resource for both learners and educators. However, the technology isn't without its limitations. The more we use and interact with AI systems, the more we'll understand where they can be utilized effectively, and where they fall short compared to other tools. Across each of the six issues, AI Bytes will demonstrate the benefits AI can provide in Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) learning and education.

Check out the AI Bytes e-Bulletins below:

Issue 1

Issue 1 (French)

The first edition of AI Bytes introduces the AI Bytes team and discusses strengths, weaknesses, and common discussion topics surrounding AI to help you deepen your understanding of what “Artificial Intelligence” is. It also shares terms used in AI and provides an overview of various types of AI used today, including Generative AI, Chatbots, and “Computer Vision” AI.

Issue 2

Issue 2 (French)

The second issue discusses Generative AI and the most common tools that use it, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Microsoft’s Copilot.

Issue 3

Issue 3 (French)

The third issue explores AI tools and assistants that can enhance your teaching and spark creativity in the classroom. The issue delves into how chatbots work, shares tools designed for location-based services, and explores essential prompt writing techniques. It also highlights practical AI applications to support English language learners and provides an opportunity to try a new AI tool.

Issue 4

Issue 4 (French)

The fourth issue discusses how it's important to focus on "AI Literacy" in LBS. With how much AI impacts our daily lives, it's valuable to be able to understand AI and know how to effectively interact with it. This issue also covers how AI impacts work and job-hunting, and how job-seekers can utilize AI when searching for and applying for jobs.
